Environmental Justice
At Manito United Methodist Church, we work to put our actions where our values are. We celebrate the environment that God gave us to take care of.
For example, we are moving away from disposable items to reusable materials. We use cloth napkins instead of paper, washable dishes and utensils instead of paper, plastic or styrofoam ones.
Since 2025, Manito United Methodist Church has been hosting Eco-Anxiety Cafes on the first Saturday morning of the month. These free sessions are designed to help community members with the isolation, helplessness, and overwhelm that can arise from eco anxiety, the "fear of environmental doom," which affects a reported 2/3 of all Americans.
In early 2024, MUMC was one of several Spokane area churches to host a Climate Justice Book Study, focusing on "Wake Up World, a Curriculum on the Climate Crisis for Faith and Community Groups", written and developed by retired Spokane Methodist minister and clinical social worker Rev. Dr. Robert and Anita Dygert-Gearheart.
In early 2025, Manito United Methodist Church joined other churches within the California-Pacific Conference to raise funds for, and awareness of, people impacted by the wildfires in California.
For many years, Manito United Methodist Church has celebrated Earth Day to show our support for environmental protection.
